How to teach textbook lessons properly to students: tips for teachers

For every academic subject, there are standard textbook that are used to teach students. These textbooks are designed as per the syllabus for the particular academic course. The coursebooks have a set of lessons that need to be taught to students for their academic growth, exam purpose, and more. To teach a lesson properly, teachers need to follow the right way. Let us discuss some tips that teachers can use to teach a lesson properly, and make it understandable to students.

Tips for teachers to teach textbook lessons properly

  1. First give a gist about what all will be covered in the lesson

Opening the coursebook and directly jumping to the lesson must be avoided. This can be confusing and a vague learning experience for students. Teachers must start by giving students a gist of what will be covered in the particular lesson. Provide them with an overview of the main headings. This will help students to have a proper idea and be prepared for further classes. You can prepare a summary and read it out to students. Or teachers can also make a PPT, and make students have a view of it before starting the lesson from the textbook.

  1. Use technology to teach

For teaching any subject lesson properly, don’t limit yourself to textbook material only. Sometimes understanding everything from the textbooks becomes difficult as well as less engaging for students. In this regard, technology helps. By using online teaching apps and sites, teachers can access several audiovisual tools like educational videos, modules, demonstrations, picture cards, PowerPoint presentations, and more. With the help of visualization, students tend to understand the concepts better and quicker. Also, teachers will be able to wind up the lesson time and later have effective practice sessions.

  1. Make students read aloud

The next step is to make students read the lesson. Don’t start reading yourself. This can make students feel bored or distracted from the class. Reverse the process and ask students to read. When students know that they will be asked to read aloud, they become more attentive and concentrated in the class. With the one-wise reading of the lesson, students will understand well. Make them underline or highlight the important terms and definitions also.

  1. Now give a detailed explanation of the topic

Once done with the reading activity, now teachers should give students a detailed explanation of the topic.  Explain to them the important terms, definitions, the purpose of studying it, its usage, and later practice the related questions too. This will help students to understand the lessons properly.

  1. Have participatory activities

Only teachers explaining, and students simply sitting as mere listeners don’t do justice to teaching and learning. Students’ contribution to the class is equally important. Therefore avoid the teacher-centered approach to teaching and try to involve students in the class as much as possible. By using school ERP, teachers can plan well to have interesting participatory activities.

For example, the lesson you just finished, have a question-answer round based on it. Ask students some basic questions to check how much they understood and where they are lagging. Other activities such as group discussions can also be conducted. This will allow students to speak up, share their knowledge with others, and get instant feedback from the teachers too.

  1. Ensure doubt resolution

To teach a lesson or a particular topic of it properly, ensuring proper doubt resolution is important. Not all students have the same effective understanding level. Many students face doubts, and queries and are curious to know more. In such cases proper doubt resolution is important.

Once done with the teaching part, ask students whether they have any doubts or not. Many students fear asking doubts. They feel that they might be judged or scolded. Try to make your students feel comfortable, cared and confident so that they can ask doubts from teachers without any hesitation. Try your best to provide students with a clear understanding of their doubts.

  1. End the class by giving homework

After a detailed explanation and doubt resolution, the last step is to give homework to students. Along with classroom learning, self-studies are equally important. To make your students self-study and revise at home, give them some learning work. Using LMS portals, teachers can have records of students’ homework submissions just with a few clicks and taps. Keep a check that all are submitting the homework on time.

Conclusion

Every textbook has a set of lessons that teachers have to teach. The exams are designed based on these curriculum lessons only. By following the above-mentioned tips, teachers can teach any lesson effectively and efficiently to students. This will ensure that students receive a clear and in-depth understanding of the academic subjects.
